Summer Cooling Tips

Summer Cooling Tips

We continue from our previous blog https://glennduxbury-inspections.com/home-prepared-summer/ and our recent Newsletter.

Keeping cool in Summer heat is not only more comfortable but also healthier for you.

Ensure a cool Summer – not to mention a lower energy output – with a few simple air-flow updates, from your “cool” Home Inspector.

Switch your ceiling fan to run counter-clockwise (the blades are tilted upward as they spin) to push air downward and create a stronger draft.

Get an attic fan. Just moving the air and having good ventilation could eliminate the need for A/C. Run the blower on your furnace, also.

Replace your air conditioner’s filter and have your system professionally serviced. You’ll breathe easier with reduced possibilities of air-cooling malfunctions in the sweltering Summer heat.

Enjoy your shade trees. Shade is always cooling in Summer and you can enjoy a “cuppa” under them while cooling yourself. Bare branches allow sunshine in, for Winter warmth.

Use awnings to shade the home, or good old Shutters. Shutters can provide ventilation, security, shading and storm-protection in one simple device.

Cupolas can be as functional as they are decorative. As warm air rises, cupolas allow hot air to escape at the high points in the house, while bringing up cooler air from below. This also creates a steady air-flow, even when there is no breeze outside. In some homes, cupolas provide soft, indirect sunlight that illuminates the home without bringing in the heat. This same principle can work to help Summer cooling in almost any house, if you can assist air-flow by way of an opening skylight or attic fan (see above)

Invite summer indoors
Simple, seasonal interior updates are key to making your home fit for Summer, creating that feeling that Winter is a world away. Update your space with lighter, brighter accessories. “Extinguish” anything that evokes heat – fire logs, heavy rugs and draperies, heaters, slippers and thick blankets.

Bring in fresh cut flowers and trade in your Winter mats with light weight ones. Winter will be out of sight and, thankfully, out of mind, finally.

Think about easy, minimum-cooking meals, to keep extra heat out of the kitchen, like salads. There is such a variety to choose from.  A Summer Kitchen is a great idea.

BBQ’s are a great way to prepare meals, without heating your kitchen, and enjoy the great outdoors at the same time.

Summer often seems “too short”, so make the most of it while you can.

Keep yourself and your surroundings as cool as possible to enjoy the sunny days.
